In front of a temple with a pediment inscribed with his name, Homer, a deified poet seated on a pedestal. A winged Victory places a laurel wreath on his head. At his feet, two allegories: the Iliad with the sword, the Odyssey with an oar. Forty-six men from Antiquity in full length: on the left Aeschylus with a roll of parchment, Apelles with brushes and palette; on the right Pindar with his lyre, Phidias with his mallet, Dante and Raphael. The other moderns placed lower and at mid-length: Racine, Boileau, Molière, Corneille, La Fontaine, Nicolas Poussin. (Louvre)
