From 1917 until 1930, Matisse spent much of his time in the resort city of Nice in southern France. During this period he drew most of his subject matter from his immediate surroundings. In addition to professional models, he also painted his twenty-four-year-old daughter, Marguerite Matisse (1894–1983), shown here in an elaborate hat. (WA)
