La Punta della Dogana a Venezia (18th century)

Guardi, Francesco (1712-1793)

La Punta della Dogana a Venezia (The Punta della Dogana in Venice)
18th century
Brown wash, pen on brown paper, 14.8 x 29.9 cm
Museo del PradoMadrid

The drawing, whose surface is somewhat lost, is considered original by the artist due to the nervous line with which it touches architectures and characters. Guardi used his drawings, copied from life, in more or less idealized pictorial interpretations of Venice. In this case, the Prado drawing is related to two paintings by the artist, one with Punta della Dogana, in the Columbia University Museum (N.Y.) and another from the Potocki collection, later sold in London. (Text extracted from Mena Marqués, M.B., Catalog of drawings. VII. Italian drawings of the 18th and 19th centuries, Museo del Prado, 1990, p. 90). (MNP)
