Commissioned by Isabella d’Este, Marchioness of Mantua (1474-1539) to adorn with four other paintings (Mantegna INV. 370 and INV. 256 finished by Costa, Costa INV. 255, Perugino INV. 722) his first studiolo at the Castello di San Giorgio at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.
