Corot, Jean-Baptiste-Camille (1796-1875)
La Trinité-des-Monts à Rome (Trinità dei Monti in Rome)
1826–1828
Oil on paper mounted on canvas, 27.3 x 44.7 cm
Musée d’art et d’histoire, Genève
The Church of the Trinità dei Monti, one of the five French churches in Rome, and the maze of roofs and bell towers that surround it are one of Corot‘s favorite subjects. Built by the King of France Charles VIII and restored by Louis XVIII. It is located on one of the seven hills of the Eternal City, overlooking the Piazza di Spagna, not far from the Caffè Greco where artists and writers met. This Roman site, drawn and painted many times by members of the colony of artists staying in Rome, is distinguished by Corot for its freshness, its morning atmosphere and its rendering of the Italian light, so singular.
