The theme of childhood runs through all of Degas‘ work, from dancers to nurses. This slightly off-center composition presents a nurse installed on a terrace in the Luxembourg Gardens, breastfeeding a newborn, Henri de Valpinçon, from a family of collectors close to the artist. (FABRE)
