Corot, Jean-Baptiste-Camille (1796-1875)
Le Moulin de la Galette
c.1840–1845
Oil on paper mounted on canvas, 25.5 x 33.8 cm
Musée d’art et d’histoire, Genève
This canvas is among the rare Parisian views painted by Corot. It represents “Le Radet”, a mill built at the beginning of the 18th century. Transformed into a tavern in 1834, it became the “Moulin de la Galette”. Here, the painter translates values subtly modulated by contrasts of shadow and light, while exceptional clarity produces seductive effects. (MAH)
