This colorful landscape is a study for a larger work that depicts vehicles for flight, including a biplane, dirigible, and balloon, the last of which appears here. A gray hot air balloon without a gondola floats without a pilot or an apparent destination over the River Seine. As a customs worker, Rousseau spent many hours taking in views of bridges and points of passage into the city of through towns like Sèvres, a southwestern suburb of Paris known for its porcelain manufacturing.
