Pietà (1563)

Tintoretto, Jacopo (1518-1594)

Pietà
1563
Oil on canvas, 108 x 170 cm
Pinacoteca di Brera, Milano

The painting was intended to decorate a lunette in the courtyard of the Procuratie di San Marco in Venice and, according to documents, was executed around 1563. It is an intense and dramatic work where, according to the dictates of the Counter-Reformation, all the elements – from the color to the gestures of the characters – contribute to transmitting a strong devotional charge to the viewer.
