Le Bateau goudronné (Tarring the Boat)

Édouard Manet painted this scene in 1873 while on a visit to Berck-sur-Mer, France, a fishing village on the Channel coast, with his family. Without a port to shelter their boats, fishermen in Berck beached their vessels in the sand along the water. Here, they are applying flaming tar to a boat to protect it from dampness while they are ashore. (BF)
