Intérieur à Nice (Interior at Nice)
c.1919
Oil on canvas, 66.7 x 54.9 cm
Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis
In this canvas, Henri Matisse evoked the relaxed atmosphere of Nice, France, a seaside city where the artist lived and worked for many years. Large, open doors reveal the palm trees and sands of the sunny Mediterranean coast. Within the interior, Matisse explored a range of vibrant hues and decorative patterns around a seated figure who appears to be deep in thought. The artist painted variants of this picture with differing coloristic effects. (SLAM)
