Renoir, Pierre-Auguste (1841-1919)

Les Amoureux (The Lovers)
1875
Oil on canvas, 175 x 130 cm
National GalleryPrague

The resting pair of lovers in the middle of nature in the painting Lovers is presented in a highly dynamic painting with rapidly alternating color spots that imitate the shivering of atmospheric light. Both characters are specific and were Renoir‘s frequent models. They are actress Henriette Henriot and painter Pierre Frank-Lamy. Among the Impressionists, mainly landscape painters, Renoir had a special place, as he often focused his attention on figural subjects. (NGP)
