Gérôme, Jean-Léon (1824-1904)
Étude des palmiers (Study of Palm Trees)
1855–1856
Oil on canvas, laid down on board, 26.7 × 32.4 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Gérôme painted this study during his first trip to Egypt in 1855–56. The same cluster of palm trees reappears with slight variations in Camels at a Watering Place (National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa), which Gérôme exhibited at the Salon of 1857. It was there that he made his debut as a painter of Middle Eastern subjects, a theme with which he became closely identified for the rest of his career. (MET)
