Grande natura morta con la zucca (Still Life with Pumpkin)
1917
Oil on panel, 92 x 65 cm
Pinacoteca di Brera, Milano

Painted in 1917, Large Still Life with Pumpkin is a typical example of the paintings conducted between 1916 and 1919 along the lines of Synthetic Cubism, theorized by Severini in two seminal articles that explore the interpenetration of planes and bodies: the idea-image of the object and the divisionism of forms.

In this painting, the supporting surface of the objects is flipped vertically, the profiles and silhouettes on the surface are multiplied, and painted parts are inserted with a trompe l’oeil effect. (Brera)
