Charcoal on heterogeneous brown industrial wove paper, probably wrapping paper. Label on the back of the montage: Portrait of Courbet drawn by himself at the time of the Commune in 1871, while he was in hiding to escape the investigations of the police who were looking for him as a Communard. He had shaved so as not to be recognized in the event he was discovered. (Louvre)
