Rubens, Peter Paul (1577-1640)

Hélène Fourment putting on a glove
c.1632
Oil on oak, 96.6 x 69 cm
Alte PinakothekMunich

When compared with the elaborate and imposing full-length portrait of Helene Fourment in the collection (inv. no. 340), the present likeness seems far simpler. The movement of her hand as she slips on the glove creates an impression of casualness and gives the portrait its spontaneous feel. The accessory is by no means an accidental detail however: gloves at that time were extremely expensive, denoting status. (APM)
