Commissioned during the winter of 14961497 by Isabelle d’Este, Marchioness of Mantua (1474-1539) for the decoration of her first studiolo at the Castello di San Giorgio which subsequently included four other paintings (Mantegna INV. 371 and INV. 256 finished by Costa, Costa INV. 255, Perugino INV. 722). The oil repaintings of the landscape, the figure of Venus, the heads of Apollo and several muses are probably the work of Lorenzo Leonbruno (before 1489-1537). (Louvre)
