Rembrandt (1606-1669)
Saint Matthew and the Angel
1661
Oil on canvas, 96 x 81 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris
It is not certain, as Valentiner proposed, that the painting was part of a series of apostles or evangelists comparable to those painted by the Flemings of the time (Rubens, Van Dyck). Likewise, the supposition that the angel would have the features of Rembrandt‘s son, Titus, remains pure conjecture. (Louvre)
