The painting was purchased in London for 2,500 pounds by Ettore Modigliani in 1933 with the proceeds of the Mostra d’Arte Antica Italiana (1930) and the contribution of the Amici di Brera association.
The work portrays Sir Richard Hely Hutchinson, Baron of Donoughmore, who lived between 1756 and 1825 and was a member of the Irish Parliament, a role also highlighted in the painting by the detail of the red uniform of the Irish army. (Brera)
