Autorretrato (1936-1937)

Siqueiros, David Alfaro (1896-1974)

Autorretrato (Self-portrait)
Lithograph, 58 × 40 cm
Metropolitan Museum of ArtNew York

Alongside Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, Siqueiros was one of the three mural painters known collectively as Los tres grandes (The Three Greats) who decorated the walls of public buildings throughout Mexico and in the United States.
This is Siqueiros’s second attempt at a lithograph self-portrait; an earlier one made in New York in 1934 was never printed. The huge scale of his head reflects his experience as a muralist and possibly the view that he took of the importance of his work. (MET)
