Holbein became court painter to Henry VIII of England in 1536. Among the first of his paintings in the service of the King was this portrait of Jane Seymour (1509–1537). As lady-in-waiting she had served two Queens consecutively, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, until she herself became the third wife of the English King immediately after the execution of Anne in 1536. Jane died the following year after the birth of the couple’s son and heir to the throne, Edward. (KHM)
